MarEcoTel Sonar Response

Led by the Marine Ecology and Telemetry team, and in collaboration with the US Navy’s Marine Mammal Monitoring (M3R) on Navy Ranges program, we are using long-term, high-resolution biologging and GPS tags to track Cuvier’s beaked whales and fin whales at the Southern California Offshore Range (SCORE). Using both coordinated and opportunistic sonar exposures, we hope to deepen understanding of both species’ baseline behavior and their reactions to naval sonar activities.

SDR’s part in this work is supported by the US Navy’s Living Marine Resources program. Other Navy entities have supported related work.

I teach statistics and use them to understand how animals behave, especially their reactions to sound.
